Chile: Augusto Pinochet was obeyed even by the trees!

The Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet, who died December 10, 2006 at the age of 91 years, boasted to the leaves of control trees during his long stay in power since the coup of September 1973 until 1990.

"Each sheet does not move in this country if I did not move me, make that clear," launched one day General Pinochet, who had established one of the most repressive military regimes in Latin America.

The dictator died without ever having to answer for crimes committed in Chile during the 17 years of his dictatorship over 3,000 political killings and disappearances of a thousand.

Despite hundreds of complaints filed against him, he was never prosecuted, for his health, considered fragile, has spared all trials.

His widow, Lucia Hiriart (87 years) and 17 members of his entourage were charged with embezzlement of public funds amounting to EUR 19 million committed between 1980 and 2004, and deposited a hundred secret accounts in the U.S. and elsewhere abroad.
