The King of Kings (Negusa Negest), Ras Tafari, Emperor of Ethiopia, a descendant of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, Haile Selassie I (1892-1975) had in his palace in Addis Ababa, a pack of domesticated lions, fed and cared for by a hundred eunuchs.
It was not circus animals or animal parade, but the true guardians of the emperor-son-of-God. These lions had incredible powers: when they scented an enemy of the emperor, he was instantly devoured. Thus, several opponents Selassie invited for a meal at the Imperial Palace, had in turn served as food to the lions without being able to express their ideas!
Last Emperor of Ethiopia, he reigned from 1930 to 1941 and from 1941 to 1974. Overthrown by a military coup September 12, 1994, he died strangled in prison Aug. 27, 1975.
His body was discovered in the office of dictator Mengistu Haile Maryam in 1992. On November 5, 2000, he was entitled to a solemn funeral in the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Addis Ababa.
