Burundi: Poor Peter, You should not make cry Maggy!

 
"Politics is the set of processes by which men without foresight lead men without memory," wrote Academician Jean Mistler (1897-1988).

I like Burundi, it is also my country!

        
I live in Switzerland for 30 years. I am Congolese by birth, Rwandan and Ugandan of origin and culture. My great-grandfather, dignitary of Mwami Yuhi Musinga V (1883-1944), was governor of Bufumbira in Uganda which included current Jomba, the area where the helds of my gandfather  were grazing, when a border terminal (1921) made it the Congo Belgian. He had to choose to live in the region of Jomba then Belgian Congo, where fate made me born in 1953.
        
These are two Europeans civil  servants (one English and one Belgian) of the Orts-Milner convetion of 1921 under the influence of alcohol, using volcanoes to delineate their colonies, and have shared my identity! My family was thus separated into different nationalities. But it was only a "European" border,  because we were united by the heart and the same culture, the same language and the same customs.
        
Today these former settlers continue surreptitiously to impose their political definitions (Democracy, Religion, History ...) and even their social deviations (Soon gay marriage!) to globalize us! And this goes to the rhythm of cellphone and internet.
        
But, when our societies are crumbling, many take the opportunity to laugh at us, calling us wilds. They  present Africa as a patchwork of tribes, naturally hostile to each other. This business of "sauvagisation" was developed to legitimize what the Colon called the "civilizing mission". Also, some people encourage excesses of our leaders in the name of sacrosanct democracy.
         This is what is happening in Burundi, where a false-true peace was signed in  August 2000 by sharing power along ethnic lines. Proponents of Hutuland and Tutsiland thesis (Rwanda and Burundi), the French and the Belgians had managed to consolidate their Manichean criterion of "divide ut imperat" which allowed them to colonize the Great Lakes region without having neither competence nor the means.
        
And when this artificial division results in the greatest genocide of the twentieth century in Rwanda in 1994, they are the first to run away and come back later with words and an apology to clear the "most unspeakable denial of humanity", the culmination of their colonial policy.
        
That is why the story I tell today comes straight from the heart, and should reflect these foreigners, especially Westerners that continue to divide us by treating us Ugandans, Congolese, Rwandans and Burundians according to their own standards: hypocrites and liars Tutsi and Hutus, good and obedient..., as in the days of the colony, etc ... (see Pierre Péant, Black furies, white liars: Rwanda 1990-1994, Fayard, Paris, 2014).
 
A second genocide began in Burundi !

         By observing the regime of Pierre Nkurunziza (The announcer of the good news!) from the beginning and activities of Maggy Barankitse, I told myself that the day the first will force the latter to left Burundi, the Burundi genocide was inevitable. Because both were the two opposite sides of  Burundi!
        
Contrary to what happened in Rwanda in 1994, U.N. peacekeepers are near Bujunbura. They are, in the nearly Congo, simply, an emergency meeting of the Security Council and a call from Mr. Ban Ki Moon that they cross the border at Gatumba to observe without ... involving the river of blood that will spring from the source of the Nile!
        
How many Burundians killed by the police and by "Imbonerakure", these militias C.N.D.D.-F.D.D., of the service of Pierre Nkurunziza, it will take for the Security Council to meet: 300, 3,000 or 30,000?
        
By the way, how many Tutsi corpses, the Interahamwe (M.R.N.D. militias) of Rwanda trained and equiped by the French army had they done before sending U.N.A.M.I.R. in Rwanda? And what has been  prevented by the U.N.A.M.I.R.?
         I again and still see a Belgian peacekeeper tore his blue cap with the bayonet for not having been able to save his ten companions tortured and killed right in Kigali!
        
Who send guns  and machetes to the Imbonerakure ? Resulting in the thickets of the Congo? Who dresses and team them? (Follow my eyes).
        
France wants it to avenge his defeat vis-à-vis of the R.P.F. of  Paul Kagame that they have not digested and that sounds like the opprobrium of their policy in the Great Lakes region? The French army would dare she repeat the macabre feat Operation Turquoise before the whole world?
        
Otherwise why the French Socialist Party to power in France prevents the trial of "Rwandan genocide" installed on its territory? Why does France did not wants to normalize relations with the power of Kigali, while the Survival Association has officially denounced the complicity of the french government of the day with the genocidal government of Rwanda in 1994.
         A complaint against X was considered by the High Court for "complicity of France in the Rwandan genocide involving officials ". This complaint is of French political and military officials stationed in the early 90s to the assistance that was provided to the government of Jean Kambanda (in prison now in Mali), who prepared and perpetrated the genocide of Rwandan Tutsis in 1994 designated as such under the military assistance, arms and ammunition before, during and after the genocide. The government of Edouard Balladur (1993-1995) kept refueled with genocidal weapons and ammunition until June 1994, despite the embargo imposed by the United Nations!

Dear Maggie, your cry and your mother courage tears will be heard.

        
In 1974, when I was at the University of Lubumbashi, I frequented a tavern with my friends at night to drink beer. My friends Rwandan and Congolese tried in vain to invite our comrades Brundian at our table. When we asked them why they did not want to drink with us, they simply told us in Kirundi "Murasakuza" which means: "You Banyarwanda and Congoleses, you talk too much when you drink while we Burundians, we just drink and not talk. " In fact, I realized that the Burundians do not know how to express their feelings, often the most painful!
        
And among my colleagues from Burundi, Libère B. became pale when he met our colleague Françoise G., from Rwanda, fled to Bujumbura. I finally asked him why he had such attitude to this girl. In response, he invited me to his dorm room at the Campus and showed me his back scarred by many and huge scars.
        
It was Francoise and another colleague in his class who had slashed with machetes distributed to schools so that the Hutu and Tutsi youth are killing each other according to "Secrets" instructions given by the army of President Michel Micombero (1940-1983). That was in May-June 1972, that is to say, 22 years to the day before the genocide in Rwanda. 100.000-200.000 Burundians were killed in four months because they were Hutu labeled by the Belgian colonization.
        
The complicit silence from good education of Burundian called "Ikinyabupfura", hatred and resentment now locked in a veritable wall of silence! Can we really confine the collective memory in a coffin and buried with the dead? What then serve history if not to dig up what used to heal wounds and reconcile the people?
Pressurized, Françoise told me the truth. Libère had been left for dead in a pit and ended up in Bukavu after being treated for his injuries. And then at the University of Lubumbashi thanks to a scholarship of the High Commissioner for Refugees!

How to close the deep scars and trauma nightmarish of my colleague Libère B.?

        
In seeking to reconcile my two colleagues historians Françoise G. and Libère B., I ran to the wall of silence that had turned into a taboo! I understood then that such an accomplice and shared silence that characterizes most Burundians, is more deadly than the chatter of Congolese and Rwandophones. I realized then that local politicians had managed to turn into potential genocidal future, young Burundians. I started crying and praying, thanking God for letting me be born in Congo, where fighting and other conflicts were between populations without degenerating in genocides! Twenty-two years later, I was caught up by the horror that came from Rwanda. But this is another chapter of the same story!
        
True peace in the Great Lakes peoples must emerge reconciliation of populations that have killing  and not between politicians who negotiate around statistics and population figures, positions of power and other goals.
        
How many Tutsis or Hutus must be counted in the Hutuland and or the Tutsiland? Who should direct the Hutuland? Who can or should govern Tutsiland? Especially in Burundi, more than elsewhere there is Hutsilandais, more of that pure Tutsi or Hutu pure!
        
I do not see also in what category the Bahima were placed, the Banyaruguru, the Baganwa (clan of Bami) and Batwa (the first people of Burundi) in "The Arusha Accord for Peace and Reconciliation in Burundi "of August 28, 2000!
 
The Arusha accord begins in such terms: Determined to put aside our disputes in our events ... instead of Ending definitely our differences!
        
You, Maggy, you have exceeded the differences of Burundians by creating "Oasis of Peace, La Casa de la Pace and The House Shalom". You were right too soon, because you exceeded Burundian and African Politicians who referring again and again to "simple disputes in Burundi events." The heart have reasons, that reason does not know!

Dry your tears, my dear sister, Maggy, and cry your pain to the whole world!

        
My admiration for you, Maggy is that you say aloud what many of your countrymen, even those who have the means will never say (even if their life depends on it) think in silence!
Your message to "Radio Canada" moved me and will affect all those who like me never want to hear the word "genocide" in the region of the African Great Lakes.
        
Each of us will use the means available to relay your suffering and that of Burundians, who tremble every night in the Bujumbura neighborhoods. Even if the power in Burundi liquid throughout the local press, hunting the local representatives of the international media and associations of human rights, there and there will be Facebook, Twitter, bloggers, the cyberpresse, cellphone to convey images and messages! Holocaust denial and lies of spokesman of the burundian governments, death squads, extortion of militia will now be denounced by Mr. and Mrs. everybody!
        
In the age of the information superhighway, we must not leave a bloody power massacre his people, only to retain power. Damn the rigged elections and democracy of machete! Damn the foreign states supporting such power that they do not agree with them!

Excuse me ! I forgot to introduce Maggy Barankitse for whom I write this article.

        
Born in 1957 in Nyamutobo, 3 km from Ruyigi. After graduation, she began a career as a teacher. In 1972, during the massacres of Hutus, she is tied up by a horde of Tutsis and forced to witness the killing of children.
        
On October 24, 1993, after the assassination of President Melchior Ndadaye (1953-1993) and the slaughter of ensuing over 50,000 Burundian, she works as a secretary in the home of the bishop of Ruyigi, Joseph Nduhirubusa. Already adoptive mother of seven orphans (4 Hutus and Tutsis 3), she managed to save 25 orphans.
        
Since then, she has managed to create three centers that receive traumatized and mutilated orphans: Oasis of Peace, La Casa de la Pace and The House Shalom (which is also the name of his organization). Her organization eventually accommodate over ten years, more than 10,000 orphans and abandoned children.
        
Of 216 infants from the center, more than half are HIV positive. In Burundi, the people first take for a folle. For Tutsi, she was a traitor and for Hutu, the Tutsi was a spy! "Maison Shalom" is at the heart of humanitarian action in Burundi torn by a long and painful civil war.
        
Its center includes dozens of houses where live adolescents, children, infants, irrespective of ethnicity or religion, with the help of social workers, psychologists and nurses. Now it helps more that 26.000 needy persons.

Hatred will not have the last word!

        
In December 1998, she received from the hands of French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin (1997-2002), the Award of Human Rights awarded by the French government as part of the 50th anniversary ceremonies of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights together the Dalai Lama.
        
On November 24, 2001, she received the North-South Prize (Lisbon) of the Council of Europe together with the former President of Portugal, Mario Soares (1986-1996). She won the Prize "Franklin D. Roosevelt Freedom from Want Award" by the Netherlands.
         On March 18, 2003, she received the Award for the defense of displaced persons, awarded by CEAR (Spain). On April 27, 2003, she received the "Award of the World Children" award by an international jury of 288,000 children from 26 countries in the presence of the Queen of Sweden and the grand-son of Nelson Mandela.
        
On February 2, 2004, she is made "Doctor Honoris Causa" from the University of Louvain, in Belgium. In 2004 she received the award of "Voices of Courage" sponsored by the Women's Commission for Refugee Women and Children. She also received the Trophy of Courage monthly "International Africa", the Prize of the city of Shalom Eistät and Solidarity Award from the city of Bremen in Germany.
        
In March 2005, she was made honorary citizen of the town of Perwez in Belgium. In April 2005, she received the Nansen Award, named after Fridtjof Nansen (1861-1930), Norwegian explorer and first High Commissioner for Refugees (U.N.H.C.R.), created in 1954. The same year, she received the 2004 Award for "Courage Voice" sponsored by the Women's Commission for Refugee Women and Children and the "Franklin D. Roosevelt Freedom from Want Award" awarded by the Netherlands. In 2011, she received the Foundation Award for Conflict Prevention by the former French President Jacques Chirac (1995-2007).
        
On September 29, 2011, she received a doctorate honoris causa from the University of Lille in France. On November 24, 2011, she received the Prize of Jacques Chirac Foundation, by the hands of Kofi Annan, former UN secretary-general (1997-2006). In March 2013, she was elected African of the Year by the African young surfers during International Day of Women's Rights.
        
She is now a refugee in Quebec. She denounces the genocide in Burundi, where President Pierre Nkurunziza has granted a third term in violation of the agreements signed in 2000.
